Waldemar Uhl
Prof. Dr. med. Waldemar Uhl (born in 1960) has been Chairman of the Department of Generaland Visceral Surgery at St. Josef-Hospital Bochum, a teaching hospital of Ruhr University Bochum, for 21 years. His career path led him through the University Hospitals of Ulm, Bern, and Heidelberg, before being appointed to the Chair of Surgery at Ruhr University Bochum in 2004. At his previous posts — Inselspital Bern and the University Hospital of Heidelberg — he was already regarded as an experienced visceral oncological surgeon. As an expert in pancreatic surgery, he established a nationally and internationally recognized interdisciplinary pancreatic center at the Bochum hospital. Today, this center is considered the second largest in Germany. Eachyear, over 1,500 patients with pancreatic diseases are treated, and more than 450 pancreatic procedures are performed. The Bochum clinic was the first in Germany to be certified as a pancreatic cancer center in 2010. His scientific oeuvre comprises over 700 presentations and more than 500 peer-reviewed publications with an h-index of 71. He serves on the editorial board of several journals and is a member of multiple professional associationsin Germany. Since 2022, Prof. Uhl has been a board member of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) and currently serves as its acting president for the term 2024/2025.
