Dr. Teresa Macarulla is Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and Group Leader of the Upper GI and Endocrine Tumors Group at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO). Her work focuses on pancreatic, biliary tract, and other upper gastrointestinal cancers, combining clinical and translational research to advance precision oncology.

She has been Principal Investigator in numerous phase I–III clinical trials and has contributed to key international studies, including NAPOLI‑1/3, POLO, ClarIDHy, and trials targeting HER2, FGFR, and IDH1 alterations. Her research aims to develop innovative therapeutic strategies, including targeted  therapies, immunotherapy combinations, and biomarker‑driven approaches.

Dr. Macarulla has authored more than 200 peer‑reviewed publications, the majority in high‑impact journals, and has an H‑index of 56. She is actively involved in international scientific leadership, serving as Associate Editor of ESMO GI Oncology, Co‑Chair of the ESMO GI Cancers Congress, Vice‑President  of ALIPANC, and Coordinator of the TTD biliopancreatic group.

In addition, she is committed to education and mentorship, supervising multiple PhD trainees. Internationally recognized, Dr. Macarulla is a leading figure in the field of pancreatic and biliary tract cancers.
