Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, USA

Scott W. Lowe is Chair of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Ph.D. from MIT. Dr. Lowe began his independent research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where he made foundational discoveries related to the p53 tumor suppressor, multi-step tumorigenesis, cellular senescence, and mechanisms of drug resistance in cancer. At MSKCC, his team combines mouse models, genetics, and genomics to investigate how tumor cells interact with their environment. This research has uncovered key insights into the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that drive cancer and how senescence contributes to immune surveillance and can be exploited therapeutically. Throughout his career, Dr. Lowe has trained more than 80 students and postdocs, many of whom now hold faculty positions. He has received numerous honors, including the Sidney Kimmel and Rita Allen Scholar Awards, AACR Outstanding Investigator and G.H.A. Clowes Awards, the Paul Marks Prize, and the NIH’s Alfred G. Knudsen Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the AACR.
