Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases at the Otto. Guericke University of Magdeburg in Germany, from 1995 until 2017. Since January 2018 Senior Professor at the LMU, Medical Clinic University in Munich, where he leads clinical and translational research projects related to H.pylori and Gut Microbiota. Chairman of the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEG) 2004; President of the UEGW 2006, Chairman of Education Committee of UEG. 2007-2008; President of the German Society of Gastroenterology in 2011. He has received many international awards (honorary memberships, academy of science, doctorates honoris causae, Turgu Mures, Athens, Budapest, Cluj Napoca,) 2019 life time achievement award of the United European Gastroenterology (UEG). Editor of Digestive Diseases, and member in Editorial Boards of several other international peer review journals. Director of Postgraduate Courses of the European Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy (EAGEN). His main research interests are Helicobacter pylori infection and related diseases, chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis, gastric cancer, gastric and gut microbiome, hepatocellular cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and functional gastrointestinal disorders.
