Giovanni Marchegiani
Giovanni Marchegiani is a pancreas surgeon scientist at the Hepato-biliary-pancreatic (HPB) and Liver transplant surgery service of the Padova University Hospital. As an academic, he is appointed as assistant professor of surgery at the same university, and he holds the habilitation for Full Professor in General Surgery since 2018 by the Italian Ministry of Public Health.
He graduated in Medicine at the Bologna University in 2008 with the highest degrees and laude, being awarded as the best student of the faculty of that same year. He holds a PhD at the Verona University in Inflammation, Immunity and Cancer for Pancreas Sciences. He served as a Research Fellow in Pancreas Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) of the Harvard Universityin Boston, USA. During his surgical training, he did serval clinical and research experiences at the NYU University of New York and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA. His training in Pancreas Surgery was mainly performed at the Pancreas Institute of the Verona University, the leading Institution of Italy, where he also served as a faculty for 5 years performing about 500 pancreas resections as first operator and tutor.
From the scientific standpoint, he is author of more than 350 articles in peer reviewed journals. In 2025 his H-index is 56, i10-index 191 and total citation as high as 16368. For his research he has been awarded with several national and international grants for a total value of more than 200k euro.
He is currently the secretary of the International Study Group for Pancreas Surgery (ISGPS). This is the main study group for the definition and classification of outcome in pancreas surgery worldwide. He is the Chair of the Membership and Development Committee of the European-African HepatoPancreatoBiliary Association (E-AHPBA). In this role, he is protagonist of opening several chapters of HPB surgical societies between Europe, Africa and Asia. He is the coordinator of the Young Talent group of the European Pancreatic Group (EPC). He is also the Chair of the Quality-of-Care Committee of the United European Gastroenterology (UEG). The committee is responsible for providing new and update already existing Guidelines in the GI world. He is president and faculty of the “Pancreas2000” Education course promoted by the European Pancreas Club. The course is the most important educational activity in Pancreatology in Europe.
From the editorial standpoint, he is Editor of the British Journal of Surgery (BJS) openfor HPB and Associate Editor of the European Digestive Surgery journals.
